This is the “what do I buy, and how do I actually do this?” page. You do not need a workshop or years of experience. Read one job at a time, borrow the expensive things, and remember: nearly every mistake here can be adjusted before you tighten the last screw.

Section 1

The tool list

You do not need to own every tool. The note on each card tells you what it is for and whether buying, borrowing, or renting makes sense for this garden.

4-ft spirit level

What it’s for: checking that bed edges and arbor posts are flat—not tilted uphill or downhill.

What it’s for: stretching a taut string between two points so you can sight along a longer run and make all four arbor footings the same height.

What it’s for: a big, wide fork you rock back to crack open clay 8–12 inches down without flipping the soil. This is the one tool that makes clay beds work.

What it’s for: moving bulk soil and blending topsoil with compost close to the beds. A large plastic mixing tub is cheaper if the soil pile is nearby.

Socket wrench + clamps

What they’re for: the socket wrench tightens arbor bolts; clamps temporarily hold the frame while you check that it is square and plumb.

How to actually do it

These are the short versions to use while you work. Read the whole card once before starting, then take it one numbered step at a time.

Raised bed

Build a 4 Ă— 12 cedar bed

Which path is this? The steps below are the DIY-with-2-inch-cedar path — you buy rough-sawn 2-in-thick cedar and assemble it yourself. The full cut list and assembly sequence for all four beds live in the step-by-step bed build guide; keep that link handy.

The other option — a custom cedar builder: zero carpentry on your part. Expect about $400–900 per bed for all four 4 × 12 beds (24/18/12/18-in deep: Main, Acid, Berry, Acid #2) in one builder order and delivery, built and placed. That trades money for weekends and a table saw. Skip the thin kit cedar (5/8–3/4-in boards): at this depth it bows within 2–3 years and is not recommended for this garden.

  1. Get rough-sawn, 2-in-thick cedar sized for the bed depth: 12-ft boards for the long sides and matching boards cut to 4 ft for the ends. Use the complete cut list in the bed build guide.
  2. Cut 4 Ă— 4 cedar corner blocks to match the board height. Stand a block inside each corner and join the boards to it with 3-in exterior-rated screws. Drill small starter holes near board ends to reduce splitting.
  3. Measure diagonally from one inside corner to the opposite inside corner. Measure the other diagonal. Nudge the frame until both numbers are equal.
  4. Set the squared frame in its final place, with enough walking room around it. Make it roughly level using the next guide; then loosen the clay before adding soil.

The whole squaring trick: equal diagonals = square. The individual corner can look right and still be off; trust the tape.

The beginner’s real question

Get anything dead level

  1. Set the frame where it will stay. Lay the 4-ft level across the top edge and watch the bubble.
  2. Dig a little soil away under the high side. Do not pack loose fill beneath the low side; packed fill settles later and the project tilts again.
  3. Re-check in both directions, then corner to corner. Move a small amount of soil at a time.
  4. For a run longer than the level, put the level on a known-straight board. The board extends its reach.
  5. For arbor footings, stretch a taut string line between stakes and hang a line level on it. You can also rent a laser level for a day. Set all four post anchors to that one reference line; then the whole arbor comes out true.

How exact? Level matters a lot for the arbor and only roughly for beds. A raised bed that is ½ inch off is fine. A wobbly arbor is not.

Clay soil

Broadfork the bed footprint

  1. Do this over the bed’s entire 4 × 12-ft footprint before filling the frame. Slightly damp clay is easier than bone-dry clay; do not work it when it is sticky mud.
  2. Set the broadfork tines at one end. Hold both handles and step onto the crossbar, using your body weight to press the tines down.
  3. Rock the handles gently back toward you. Pull the tool out; do not lift and flip a slab.
  4. Step back about 6 inches and repeat. Work in rows until the whole footprint is cracked open 8–12 inches deep.

What you are doing: making cracks where air, water, and roots can travel. You are cracking the clay, not turning it over.

Two-person job

Assemble the Yardistry 10 Ă— 10 cedar pergola kit

  1. Open every box and inventory the parts against the current manufacturer’s manual. Group matching bolts and label them. Do not start lifting until you know nothing is missing.
  2. Before any footings: ask the HOA whether the plat’s 10-ft rear building line applies to an open-air pergola. Settle that question before you dig a single hole or order concrete — see the arbor page for full site notes.
  3. Lay out and level the four footing locations. Get a helper for the large beams and use two stable ladders.
  4. Stand the posts. Make each one plumb—that simply means perfectly vertical—by holding the level against two adjacent faces.
  5. Attach the frame loosely. Do not fully tighten the bolts yet. Measure both diagonals across the frame and shift it until they are equal.
  6. Re-check level, plumb, and equal diagonals. Anchor the posts to the footings according to the kit and anchor instructions, then tighten bolts in stages.
  7. Drill for eye bolts and run support wires for the grape vine. Keep wire ends turned away from faces and walking paths.

Pause if needed: lifting beams is not a solo job. A helper and an extra ten minutes checking the frame are cheaper than correcting a twisted arbor.

Temporary home

Pot up the Champanel grape

  1. Open a 7-gallon fabric pot in its sunny location. Fabric pots get heavy once filled, so put it where it can stay.
  2. Fill partway with an organic potting mix. Slide the vine carefully from its nursery pot and keep the root ball together.
  3. Set the vine at the same depth it sat in the nursery pot. Sprinkle mycorrhizal inoculant directly on the roots, following the package amount; it has to touch roots to work.
  4. Fill around the root ball, leaving about an inch below the rim for watering. Press lightly—do not mash the mix solid.
  5. Water deeply until water exits the bottom. Keep it in full sun and check moisture often in Texas heat; water when the upper inch feels dry, rather than by a rigid calendar.

Why fabric? Air reaching the pot edge encourages root tips to branch instead of circling. The flexible pot also slips off cleanly at the November transplant.

Gutter first, then DIY diverter

Install a rain barrel off the downspout

Correction: the earlier advice that “you don’t need a gutter company” was wrong for this house. The house has gutters on the front half only and no gutters on the back of the house, so there is no rear downspout to divert yet.

An honest capacity note: two 55-gal barrels hold about 110 gal — roughly HALF of one summer week of water for the 192 sq ft of beds. So their main job is catching rainwater for the pH-sensitive blueberry acid bed; tap water plus drip irrigation is the summer backbone. The barrels are a real help, not the whole water plan.

  1. Install gutters on the back of the house first. Get 2–3 gutter quotes and tell each company: “back of house, one downspout at west corner, feeding a rain barrel.” Seamless aluminum typically runs about $8–15 per linear foot installed, so compare the quotes against that anchor. Ask them to match the existing gutter color, choose a quote, and schedule the gutter installation. Alternatively, DIY the rear gutter run if you are comfortable doing that work safely.
  2. Only after the new rear gutter and downspout are installed, build a solid, level raised base from cinder blocks or pavers. A full 55-gallon barrel weighs roughly 460 lb, so the base must not wobble. Raising it lets gravity feed the spigot.
  3. Place the barrel and follow the EarthMinded diverter kit’s drilling template exactly. Drill one correctly placed hole in the new downspout, then insert the diverter; it seals inside the downspout and sends water through a short hose to the barrel.
  4. Connect the hose. When the barrel fills, the diverter automatically passes the rest of the rain down the original downspout.
  5. Connect and route the barrel overflow at least 6 ft away from the foundation, sloping it away from the house. Close every opening with the supplied screen or lid so mosquitoes cannot enter.
  6. Test with a hose or the next rain. Check the base, hose connections, and direction of overflow before relying on it.

Before drilling: confirm whether your downspout is 2 Ă— 3 or 3 Ă— 4 inches and buy the matching kit.

Lumber plan for 77385

Where to buy your cedar

McCoy’s Building Supply is the pick. It is a full-service lumberyard chain across Texas, with covered lumber storage that keeps boards out of the weather, online ordering, and same- or next-day delivery on many items.

They carry the exact product: McCoy’s catalog lists 2 in x 6 in x 12 ft #2 OR BTR ROUGH CEDAR. That is precisely the board used for the 18-in Acid Bed, the 12-in Berry Bed, and the 18-in Acid Bed #2 (the 24-in Main Bed uses 2×12 or stacked 2×6 — see the bed build guide). McCoy’s also stocks 6×6 rough cedar and 2×6×16 rough cedar.

Know the real dimensions before asking for cuts. This rough cedar 2Ă—6 measures about 1-11/16 inches thick Ă— 5-3/4 inches wide. Rough lumber is fatter than smooth/S4S 2Ă— lumber, which is 1.5 inches thick. That is why the short end boards work out to about 44-5/8 inches rather than 45 inches. Rough boards vary, so always measure your own boards before confirming the cut length.

Take the delivery. Do not rent a trailer. The long sides of every bed are 12 feet and cannot be cut shorter—they are the 12-foot bed sides. Across four beds, this is roughly 25 to 30 twelve-foot boards plus 4×4 posts: a genuine lumber delivery, not a trailer run. A Home Depot trailer rental would mean several trips wrestling 12-foot cedar. McCoy’s can simply drop the whole load in the driveway.

Ask them to cut. Request the short ends at about 44-5/8 inches—but confirm that number against the actual boards—and the 4×4 corner posts at 26 inches. If McCoy’s makes those cross-cuts, you never need a saw and the bed build becomes pure assembly.

Two questions to ask when you call

  1. Do you stock 2Ă—12Ă—12 rough cedar for the 24-inch-deep Main bed, or should I use 2Ă—6 stacked four high instead?
  2. Do you cut boards to length, and what is delivery to 77385?

What is confirmed: the 2×6×12 rough cedar is listed in McCoy’s catalog. Confirm 2×12 availability, cutting service, delivery price, and timing by phone with your specific store.

Grape vine

  • Champanel potted vine — New Earth Nursery
    About $22 when checked. It arrives well-rooted in a 3.5 × 9-in pot, is self-pollinating, and typically ripens July–August.
  • Skip the mismatched listings: Womack Nursery currently lists zero grapes in stock. Texas Pecan Nursery’s Champanel is listed as “One Year Bare Root 25 Qty”—that means 25 dormant bare-root vines, a wholesale bundle, not one backyard plant.

Root helpers

  • Worm Gold Plus castings
    Listed as 94% pure worm castings plus fossilized kelp and rock dust. It is the more trusted choice here than the widely sold Wiggle Worm product, whose purity experienced growers question. A little is enough; this is an addition, not the whole potting mix.
  • DYNOMYCO granular mycorrhizal inoculant
    OMRI-listed with 900+ propagules per gram of Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae, endomycorrhizal fungi that grapes partner with. Sprinkle it on the roots at planting. It must touch roots to work.

Bulk bed soil

  • Order topsoil and finished compost by the cubic yard from a local landscape supply yard. For the four 4 Ă— 12-ft beds (24/18/12/18-in deep), bulk delivery is far cheaper and creates far less plastic waste than bags.
  • Target 70% quality topsoil + 30% finished compost. Ask whether the topsoil is screened and request a look at the actual pile. “Finished” compost should smell earthy, not sour or like ammonia.
  • Standard raised-bed mix: about 4.2 cu yd now — roughly 2.4 yd for the 24-in Main Bed plus 1.8 yd for the 12-in Berry Bed. See the bed build guide for the fill math.
  • Acid mix (Acid Bed #1, 18-in): pine bark fines + sphagnum peat + compost — about 3 cu yd now. Add no lime. Keep this mix separate from the general vegetable beds. See the shopping page for sourcing.
  • Acid Bed #2 (18-in): its cedar shell is built now but parked under cardboard + wood chips; the ~2.7 cu yd acid mix and plants are a fall-2027 order — not bought now.

Rain barrel parts

  • EarthMinded DIY Rain Barrel Diverter Kit for 3 Ă— 4-in downspouts
    Includes the internal diverter and connection parts. Measure the downspout first; this linked kit is specifically for a 3 Ă— 4-in downspout.
  • Also buy or reuse solid cinder blocks/pavers for the raised base and a hose or pipe long enough to carry overflow 6+ ft from the foundation.

Paths + tool rental

  • Free wood chips through ChipDrop
    Use arborist chips for garden paths, not mixed into the bed soil. A drop can be very large and timing is unpredictable, so read the service details and make sure the truck has a clear drop location.
  • Home Depot auger rental
    Check the nearest Tool Rental Center for a 1-man auger and current half-day availability. Call 811 before any footing excavation and read the rental tool instructions before use.
